Cold Wax

oil with cold wax

Here's my first experiment with cold wax medium with oil paint.

I am finding it interesting to work with.

It is a natural for me in that I tend to use knives and spatulas more than brushes and because I have a process that works both additively and subtractively.

I also like that the layers dry faster with the wax medium.

Nevertheless, I still have much to learn before I feel really comfortable with this medium.

  1. This looks like a very interesting technique. Do you mix the cold wax with the oil paint or layer them. I am not sure of the process. Is the wax more like renaissance wax then?

    1. Hi Roberta:
This is a cold wax medium I am using. You can make your own or use ready made which is what I am starting with (Dorland's).
For this piece I mixed the medium in with oil paint and then applied it, though it can be used in layers as well. I'm pretty ignorant of what I'm doing (typical for me), but have found some good info on line http://oilandwax.ning.com/ for instance.

I just sent you an e-mail. I used the one you show on your website link.
