"The utilitarian device known as a “String Holder” has been around since the invention of string, yarn and hemp dating back centuries. 

Over time, string holders evolved into bizarre folk art objects that abandoned the principle of “form follows function” in favor of novel caricatures and strange contraptions that have no practical purpose – i.e. art.”

I am going to have a couple of my sculptures in this show curated by Dean Nimmer & Bruce Fowler.

The exhibit promises to be inventive, surreal, and FUN, so you know the opening is going to be a great party!

Sprinkler Factory: Here we come!

Gearing up to install this show!  I am super excited because I adore this space and love these artists.  It is always an exciting day when we all show up, nerves tingling, with our current works, ready to make magic happen.

I will be showing (have I mentioned this already?) my two largest paintings, ever.

May the gods of all things level and square be with me (not my natural forte) as I attempt to hang a nine panel painting.

Busy, busy, busy!

I am busy working towards two upcoming shows.

In May I will be joining five dear friends who have all worked and exhibited together over the past five years in Worcester.

This is always a very stimulating group for me to be involved with as my fellow artists do such amazing work with sculpture, printmaking, installation, video, and even occasionally paint!

Our newest production, Continuum:  Five Years On, will open at the Sprinkler Factory, West Gallery on May 13th 2017.

The image above is a section of a large piece (74x63), oil on un-stretched canvas that I will include in  this show.

Getting Creative

Sure, artists are used to being creative in the studio, but we have to be creative in getting our work out into the world, too.

When Hammond Residential Real Estate in Belmont, Massachusetts asked if I would be interested in displaying my work in their office for a couple months I said “Yes!”

With lots of help and support from them (special thanks to Laura and Mary Ellen), I have 15 paintings on exhibit now through the end of the year.

Hammond is graciously hosting a reception this Wednesday night from 6:00 to 7:30.

This is a wee little thing, but it pleases me.

I made it during a totally exhilarating,  sometimes nearly chaotic, workshop at Castle Hill in Truro, Massachusetts.

The class was called Working the Surface and was taught by Bonney Goldstein.

I have long admired her work, and she was great fun to learn from.  A real fireball, she is!

There was a lot of experimentation with materials, and techniques.  For example, I used more collage elements than is usual for me.

Thank you to so many friends and family members who made the trip to Northampton for my solo show.


I had the chance to meet lots of new, interesting folks that I hope to see again, as well.

This exhibition, with thirty pieces of my work in a wide range of media, will be up until the end of the month.

The Artist Talks last weekend at the Sprinkler Factory Gallery were a real success.

This event concluded our group's show entitled "the [space] between".

Thanks to everyone who came and made this show such a rewarding experience.

Now I am packing up another group of paintings for my solo show in Northampton, MA at Imagine Gallery!

Diptych

Historically, diptychs were two equal, hinged panels most frequently for Christian imagery.

Royalty  sometimes had portraits of husband and wife painted in this manner.

In contemporary art, the hinge has become optional, and the panels are not always the same size.
What they share with their predecessors is that while there is a thematic and visual relationship, each panel can stand on its own as a painting.

In other words, putting two canvases next to each other and painting one big painting on them does not automatically make a diptych.

This was my first try at this format.  It was a good challenge!

Brush Gallery Massachusetts Artists Biennial

This Saturday, March 16th, is the opening for Massachusetts Artists 2013 Biennial at the Brush Gallery in Lowell, MA.

All three of my submissions were accepted by juror Dina Deitsch, curator of contemporary art at DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum.  She chose only 34 pieces from the nearly 200 submitted.

I am honored and excited!

As for the piece above:  hot off the presses!  Well, actually no presses involved, although there were some printmaking techniques used.

This came out of a terrific workshop I attended last weekend in Holyoke.  Taught by Dean Nimmer (of Art from Intuition fame), we explored monotype printmaking, printing over painted surfaces and drawing into prints.

I came away energized and with a mess of prints that I am looking forward to working with.
